Are Insights All They're Cracked Up To Be?

One of my biggest passions is helping businesses succeed. That's one of the reasons why I started my own business.

You should feel empowered to use social media to your benefit, to have it serve your business goals and values. Not the other way around.

Knowing how to use your social media insights is just one step to getting you there. Your insights are a powerful tool that will help you better target your social media content to your audience so you know when to post and what to post.

Social Media isn’t as hard as it seems

No matter your feelings toward social media – whether it’s good or bad – there’s no doubt it’s a powerful tool that can help your business succeed.

81% of Instagram users say that they use the platform to research products and services.

That means that if you’re not on Instagram, you’re missing out.

So, if you’re not on Instagram, pick up your smartphone right now and download it. I’ll wait 

(If you’re not sure how, check out this step by step to creating an IG account)

Now that you’re on, make sure you have a Business Account by going to your settings and tap Account. Scroll to the bottom and select ‘Switch Account Type’ to choose Business Account.

Using Instagram Insights

Once you have a business account, you’ll need at least 100 followers in order to start using insights. Once you’re there, insights are an amazing tool that can show you what content is working and what is not. It will tell you when your audience online so you’ll never have to ask yourself again “when the heck do I post?!”

Insights will show you how your audience is engaging with your content, how long they’re watching your videos, whether or not they like your content, and how many people you’re reaching. It will even show your audience’s age range, gender, and location.

Talk about valuable information – all available at your fingertips!

In the good old days, you’d spend months collecting that kind of data from your in person customers, and now, social media does all the tracking for you.

How Often Should You Use Insights?

Now that you know where to find your insights, the next thing you’re probably wondering is how often you should be checking them. While there’s no hard and fast rule, I recommend checking in once a week. I know you’re already coming up with a million reasons why you don’t have the time to do this, but I promise you, it will only take 5 minutes of your time!

It’s simply a matter of going into your Insights and looking at all the content you posted in the last week, while it’s still fresh in your mind and you can remember what each post was for. Look at what the engagement was like on each one – how did it perform compared to other posts you’ve done? Was there something that didn’t get any engagement? Make a mental note to change up how you post that type of content in the future.

Then, check in on when your audience is online. This may not change very often, but keeping up with it on a weekly basis will help you plan out your content for the next week so you can stop the guessing game.

Just those quick checks on your Insights will help better target your social media content to your audience. They are, after all, the reason you’re there!
