Let's face it, standing out on social media these days feels harder than taking on Rocky in a fight.
Marketing your business isn't the only thing you have to do in a day. If it was, you'd have no problems.
But you're not just a marketer. You're also admin, customer service, CEO, maybe bookkeeper, collections, and every other hat that's required to keep your business up and running.
You don't have time to take every marketing course out there in order compete with the big brands.
Half the time you feel like your social media posts are a bit like throwing spaghetti on a wall and just seeing what sticks.
Which means, you're wasting your precious time creating content that might completely fall flat.
And that's discouraging as heck.
You know this isn't sustainable, that this is no way to generate leads or make sales from social media.
But you just don't have the time to learn the social media strategies yourself and hiring a social media manager isn't exactly in the budget.
Which is why I'm writing this today. For the people like you and I who are starting small, building our brand to make an impact, and just need the simple strategies to get there.
After working with dozens of brands (and consulting for way more), I've found the #1 key ingredient that makes marketing any business a million times easier...
Comes down to knowing your target audience better.
What you need to know about your target audience (it's not what you've been told)
When I say get to know your target audience better, I'm not just talking about how old they are, where they live, and what their annual income is.
I'm talking about their personality, their characteristics, their likes and dislikes. Knowing the things that inspire them, what makes them laugh, and what makes them want to take action.
When you have an understanding of these things, you can start creating marketing content that makes them laugh, inspires them, or stops them in their tracks.
And that's how your brand can stand out among all the rest.
But this is no easy feat.
You can't just guess.
I mean, you can, but you'll just end up in the same place you are now - trying random things just to see what works.
Wouldn't it be better if you had real insights and information so you knew exactly what to post so that you got better engagement on your social media content?
That's exactly what I want to help you get today.
How to learn everything you need to know about your target audience
There are a lot of different ways you can do this, but I break down a few here to get you started:
Watch Facebook Groups
Okay, don't actually be a creep, but start joining Facebook Groups where you think your target audience would be and pay attention to what they're talking about, what questions they're asking, and what their challenges are. For example, if you sell anti-aging skin care products, you might want to check out Facebook Groups for busy moms, mompreneurs, or other women's groups.
Do some good old fashioned market research
Sometimes the tried and true methods are that way for a reason. When I first launched my membership program, I wasn't totally confident I had all the elements people would need. So, I offered free 1:1 market research calls with me where I could ask pointed questions that gave me the details I needed. This helped not only create a membership my people actually needed, but also helped me craft messaging around it that would resonate with them.
Use AI to create content for better engagement on social media
Tools like ChatGPT are absolutely brilliant for accelerating our learning curve, so why not use it to learn about your target audience (and have it create content for you while you're at it). Here are some example prompts you can use:
You are a social media expert. I am a [insert your title, niche, or what you do] that provides [insert details about your product or service]. In order to make my social media content more engaging, I want to understand my target audience more. Please give me details about who would benefit the most from my service. Include demographics and psychographics.
Then, from there, you can even go deeper to ask AI to give you some messaging ideas. You can use a follow-up prompt like this:
If I want my marketing content to resonate deeply with this audience so they respond, engage, and take action based on what they see, what are come key topics I should be talking about? Please include examples of what messaging they would resonate with the most.
This is your unfair advantage
When you think about the content you interact with the most on social media - the posts you share, like, or leave comments on - they are likely the ones that resonate with you the most. They likely made you laugh, made you stop and think, or inspired you.
That's the effect you want your content to have on your target audience so that they are more likely to engage with your posts and share with their friends.
More shares equals more leads.
